Mixed Blood Majority “Fine Print”
The term “supergroup” is tired and overused, especially in a music seen that is as intertwined as the one we have here in Minneapolis/St. Paul. That being said, I won’t use the weary “S” word, but Mixed Blood Majority, featuring raps from scene vet Crescent Moon and Joe Horton (No Bird Sing) and the beats of Lazerbeak, would fit the description. The trio released their first song, the dark banger “Fine Print,” and it is as great as one would expect when you bring together these three names. Lazerbeak is at his minimalistic best, with twinkling keyboards and crisp drums creating an eerie, foggy atmosphere for these two MC’s to spit over. It is interesting to hear these two rappers on the same track, as their baritone vocals are similar and I have always thought Horton was influenced by Crescent Moon’s serious, gruff rhymes. If “Fine Print” is any indication, the debut album from MBM, which drops in January, will start off 2013 on a very strong foot will continue the winning streak that the local rap scene has been on lately (P.O.S, Guante, Ali, etc). Catch the group tonight at Icehouse on Nicollet for their debut performance.
