The Fresh and Only’s: Dude’s Got a Tender Heart/Disoriented Youth

San Francisco Psych/Garage outfit the Fresh and Only’s have really sanded down some of the rough edges of their sound over the past couple years – making their new stuff cleaner and with much better production values. The spooky haziness is still there though – the sound isn’t completely reverb free and Heidi Alexanders’ eerie vocals thankfully aren’t going away any time soon. There is even an added element of surf-rock that could be the key to opening the band up to a wider audience. To see what I mean take a listen to the band’s recent single “Dude’s Got a Tender Heart,” as compared to a four track version of “Disoriented Youth” from over a year ago. So far I like where the band is heading – I just hope that in polishing their sound that they don’t sterilize it too much.
