yU: On Ya Head

Diamond District member yU has pledged to return to “hip hop’s golden era of boom-bap greatness” with his new solo effort, Before Taxes (out April 16^th on Mello Music Group).  His first leaked single, “On Ya Head,” is a pretty good start.  Though the intricately cut together production style is very modern, the jazzy string and horn sampling as well as Yu’s no-nonsense rhymes definitely are rooted in the early nineties.  Is that real drumming I hear though?  I may be wrong about this but to me it certainly doesn’t sound like your typical throwback 808 drum machine beats. Regardless, it is a pretty good cut and I look forward to hearing the rest.
