Futurebirds: Johnny Utah

Futurebirds are a brand new sextet out of Athens, Georgia who describe themselves as being heavily influenced by the local music scene there, including Drive By Truckers, Dead Confederate, and the Elephant Six Collective.  Their first single “Johnny Utah” shows that amalgamation of influences, and despite the silly Point Break reference, is a pretty serious tune.  The track mixes eastern sounding strings with an alt country pedal steel vibe that occasionally detours into psychedelic surf territory.  Despite being a self described bunch of “unruly boys from Georgia,” the band’s single is actually touchingly melancholy and bittersweet.   Futurebirds’ debut record Hampton’s Lullaby will be available July 13th via Autumn Tone Records.
