Sabbath Assembly: We Give Our Lives
Sabbath Assembly is a new project out of New York that takes the hymns of the Process Church of the Final Judgment (a 60’s, 70’s cult) and makes “contemporary creations” based off of them. Ironically the “contemporary” part of the process seems to involve simply setting the music to 60’s pastoral psychedelia, evoking not so much “creative flourish” as it does “NYC hipsters’ painful attempts at appearing edgy.” I will reserve judgment until I hear the whole album but the first single, “We Give Our Lives,” though hauntingly bewitching, is a pretty banal output for what sounds like could have made for a really interesting project.
