A Whisper in the Noise: True Love Will Find You in the End (Daniel Johnston cover)
Yeah, Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You in the End” has been covered a million times, but most of them aren’t as great as this version from experimental local band A Whisper in the Noise. With only spare accompaniment on guitar and piano, the AWITN cover is even more melancholy (if possible) than the heart-wrenching original. Whereas Johnston always seemed to have that wry optimism that inflects his original (after all these years I think he is still out there searching for true love) this version seems to be less hopeful. Contrary to the lyrics, it doesn’t sound like the vocalist (whom I believe is AWITN main mover and shaker West Thorston) really believes what he is singing. “Don’t be sad / I know you will” indeed.
