Grinderman “Heathen Child”
Oh, man. There are only a few bands that I get really excited to hear new material from these days, and Grinderman are more definitely one of them. The debut record of Nick Cave’s scuzzy side project is an amazing, abrasive record, and the first taste of Grinderman 2 seems that Cave and company haven’t let up one bit. Like “Dig, Lazurus, Dig!” highlight “Moonland,” “Heathen Child” escews propulsive rhtyms for a more brooding, dark and intense musical buildup for Cave’s gallow poetry. Part way through the song he lists off important people in one’s life and after saying “you think (fill in the blank) will protect you” before adding “you were wrong” in his ominous growl. Pound for pound, Nick Cave still makes the most heavy, intense rock and roll right now, hands down. I can’t wait to hear the whole album.
