Research findings from O. Omrani et al update understanding of spinal muscular atrophy genetics.

Biotech Week May 20, 2009 Scientists discuss in ‘Molecular analysis of the SMN and NAIP genes in Iranian spinal muscular atrophy patients’ new findings in spinal muscular atrophy. “Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disorder characterized by degeneration of spinal cord anterior horn cells, leading to muscular atrophy. SMA is clinically classified into three subgroups based on the age of onset and severity,” researchers in Iran report (see also Spinal Muscular Atrophy Genetics). go to web site spinal muscular atrophy

“The majority of patients with SMA have homozygous deletions of exons 7 and 8 of the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene. The purpose of the present study was to determine the frequency of SMN and neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) gene deletions in Iranian SMA patients. Experience in prenatal diagnosis of SMA in this population is also reported. To study the frequency of deletions of SMN and NAIP genes in an Iranian sample group, 75 unrelated SMA patients (54 type I, eight type II and 13 type III) were analyzed according to the methods described by van der Steege et al and Roy et al. Homozygous deletion of SMN1 exons 7 and/or 8 were identified in 68 out of 75 patients (90%). Deletion of exon 5 of the NAIP gene was found in 40/54 of type I, 2/8 of type II and 1/13 of type III patients. Deletion of the SMN1 gene is a major cause of SMA in Iran, and NAIP gene deletions were common in the present patients with type I SMA,” wrote O. Omrani and colleagues, . go to web site spinal muscular atrophy

The researchers concluded: “Also, the incidence of NAIP deletion is higher in more severe SMA.” Omrani and colleagues published their study in Pediatrics International (Molecular analysis of the SMN and NAIP genes in Iranian spinal muscular atrophy patients. $50+ after fees at a huge seated theater?

think i’ll have to pass on this one.

I am going to be out of town anyways but yeah – I think they are just charging as much as they think they can possibly get away with. Seems a little premature to charge the same for Stevens as, say, a Springsteen or Neil Young show

    Love the guy but yeesh

In addition to being cheap and not wanting to dish out that kind of cash…I wonder if anything will top that 400 bar show. Maybe with a full orchestra or something? I don’t know. Instead of being fan friendly, it comes down to supply and demand…I am sure it will sell out, and people will pay twice that or more for scalped tix, so more power to him I guess, but still sucks.

i dug that 400 Bar show way WAY more than his lame and annoying First Ave show w/ the whole cheerleader schtick just after Illinois, but his first 400 Bar show w/ Shara Worden opening was way better than both gigs… didn’t hurt that he played almost all of Seven Swans that night.

awesome. well guess he has a new EP AND Full Length to tour off of 😉

would have been nice to have that info prior to tickets going onsale… then again $50 for him in a seated theater is a bit much no matter
