Dent May “Eastover Wives”
Dent May was already borderline cheesy before. With his Stephen Merritt whine of a voice, his ukulele and his schmaltzy songs about kids going to college, there always was the risk of over doing it. Now he is mixing in schamztlzy lounge funk where his sparse, folksy arrangements used to be. Yet somehow, it still works. I don’t understand. His latest track “Eastover Wives”, is a tongue in cheek ode to the rich housewives who sneak out at night because they are “lonely” and “beautiful.” Dent May has continued to make music that on paper should be horrible, but it isn’t. It actually is really, really good.
