I have been meaning to write about the debut EP This Happening from local trio Is/Is for a while, but at this point I am resigned to mentioning that it is solid and allowing for the good folks at MPLS.TV to give you audio and visual of the fuzzed out, space-garage trio. If the members look and sound familiar, it is because they also are in local bands Gospel Gossip and First Communion Afterparty, and the sound of Is/Is bears a striking resemblance to their main bands. The four song EP is focused while still being ambitious and wide eyed and scuzzy while still sounding sharp (thanks in part to the production of the Red Pens Howard Hamilton). While there really isn’t much new here that you wouldn’t expect from the band members collected, This Happening is a fun and engaging collection and a welcome addition to what is already a banner year for local music. Catch the band live tonight at Cause (or is it back to Sauce?) in Uptown.
