Destroyer “Chinatown”
The last we heard from enigmatic songwriter Dan Bejar and his Destroyer project was the experimental and electronic Bay of Pigs. While the album wasn’t bad, it felt like a letdown after his amazing Destroyer Rubies, which is my favorite album from the singer/songwriter genre of the last few years. When I heard he was releasing a new album, Kaputt (out in January on Merge), I had high hopes it would be back to the sound he did so well on Destroyer Rubies. The first song released from the album, “Chinatown,” isn’t quite where I hoped and stills feel a little mechanic and cold, but it is a step in the right direction. I hope his quirky songwriting jumps back to the foreground on Kaputt and his electronic tinkering is left a little more for the fringes.
