Sonny And The Sunsets: “I Wanna Do It”
San Franciscan songwriter Sonny Smith has been incredibly prolific lately, releasing EP’s, writing plays, and apparently recording a brand new LP that will come out this Spring (His last, Tomorrow Is Allright came out just last year). Perhaps owning up to that creative burst, the new record is titled Hit After Hit. The first single, “I Wanna Do It” just dropped recently, and well, it is just…ok. Though I consider myself a Sonny fan, the new track just seems pretty uninspired, mostly consisting of Smith repeating the line “I wanna do it” over and over. It does start with Smith talking about walking into the sea (which has become a recurring theme in his music ever since his near-drowning) and then pretty much just fizzles into repetition. It isn’t terrible, but it also isn’t anywhere near as good as anything on Smith’s last record (not to mention his recent EP’s). Hopefully the rest of Hit After Hit makes for a more compelling listen.
