Taking A Guess At The 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival Lineup

It’s that time of the year again when all the Summer music festivals we won’t be going to are announced, featuring bands we won’t be seeing playing in the sunny, convivial atmosphere of overpriced beer and port-a-john stench that we won’t be experiencing. The exception? The Pitchfork Music Festival – the one nearby festival that A. has great music and B. we can afford.  This summer we’ll likely take to the road once again to spend a hot weekend in Chicago seeing the hypiest new bands, the most irritating new dance styles, and the most practiced senses of disafected cool.

The official lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but like last year, we get a kick out of seeing how many bands we can predict as well as naming our own dream lineups.

Josh

The improbable Wish List:

1. Neutral Milk Hotel I, along with probably millions of music fans aged 18-35, want this to happen.  Get it done Pitchfork.

2. Television playing Marquee Moon– I’m not sure if they will bring back bands playing classic albums, but this would be pretty fucking awesome.

3. Kayne West– Would officially cement them as a huge festival and would probably attract a lot of idiots who would come just for him the night he plays, but I bet it would be pretty awesome.

4. Royal Trux– JSBX played last year, so why not the other branch of Pussy Galore?

5. Any Minnesota Bands– I could spend a whole post on the awesome local bands who deserve the wider recognition this fest would give them, but lets just say I will be happy with any bands from MN that get the chance to play the fest.

I Would be Excited To See:

1. Toro Y Moi– After getting BMN for his new, wildly different sophomore album Underneath the Pine, I am excited to hear the electro-dance jams in a crowd of 10,000 people

2. Cut Copy– Like Toro Y Moi, these dudes would lead to a gigantic dance party, which sounds pretty awesome.

3. How to Dress Well– Would love to see this band and I think a mid level festival like P-Fork would be a good bet to finally have the chance.

4. Tame Impala– Missed them this last fall and think they would fit nicely in this setting.

5. Ducktails/Real Estate– Either or both would be good (yes, I know Real Estate played last year), along with similar sounding band Beach Fossils.  reverb heavy chilled out rock would sound superb on a warm summer day with a cold Goose Island in my hand.

6. Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti– Because they are awesome

7. Big KRIT– Because he produced my favorite hip hop album of 2010 and I would like to see him live

8. Mark McGuire/Emeralds– A band and a solo side project I have just come around to appreciating in the last few months would be awesome to see live.

9. Pure X/Gauntlet Hair– Two bands who haven’t released proper LP’s yet but will more than likely take the P-Fork listening audience by storm when they do.

10. Big Troubles– Their LP Worry stormed its way up my year end list at the end of 2010 and has remained a favorite since.  I would love to see them live and think their sound would be very well received at this fest.

11. Woodsman– Their new LP Rare Forms is one of my favorites from 2011 and I think they would sound massive outdoors.

12. Ty Segall/Sic Alps/Thee Oh Sees/Sonny and the Sunsets/Fresh and Onlys– Why not have a stage just for San Fran garage rock?

I Would Feel Pretty Meh About:

1. Julianna Barwick– I think she is a really good artist, but more subdued music doesn’t always translate well in this setting.

2. Wild Nothing– After a sleep inducing set at the Turf, a band I was wildly (pun intended) about now seem less exciting.

3. Vampire Weekend– The kind of cringe worthy, bring in the biggest crowd possible type act that I would hate seeing on the lineup

4. Tennis– I can only imagine the group would be as boring live as they are on record.

5. Puro Instinct– Their record is overrated and they were boring live, but they are probably a shoe in as they are getting a large amount of “buzz.”

Jon

The improbable Wish List:

1. Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel – Magnum is slowly coming out of his self imposed exile. This is probably too big of a step to be realistic.

2. Kanye West –  Unlikely, but he’s a Chicagoan so why not?

3. The Fall playing Hex Induction Hour in its entirety.  Just for the chance to see Mark E. Smith wander around Union Park for the weekend cursing and spitting unintelligibly at everyone.

I Would be Excited To See:

1. Janelle Monae – I never get tired of hearing Monae live

2. Sufjan Stevens – I have never seen him live but I would like to

3. Cut Copy – Great band, great live show, fun times

4. Tame Impala – Have so far failed to see live the creators of one of my favorite records of last year

5. Flying Lotus/Gonjasufi – I would take either or both in a heartbeat

6. Julianna Barwick – Josh is probably right about her not being good in the festival setting, but damn, I still want to hear her again!

7. Whiz Khalifa – have heard great things and I kind of expect this one to happen

8. Crystal Castles – It would seem wrong seeing them play outdoors on a sunny day though

9. Gil Scott Heron – The man is a legend

10. Fang Island – I don’t know. This could be cool, right?

11. Mogwai – For some reason I expect either them or Explosions in the Sky to play.

12. Lykke Li – She goes batshit crazy in the live setting.

13. Dum Dum Girls – I hope that this happens instead of Vivian Girls/La Sera/Tennis

I Would Feel Pretty Meh About:

1. PJ Harvey – I am just not that into PJ Harvey live

2. Wild Nothing– With Josh on this one. Booooring.

3. James Blake – I would go hear him play, I just wouldn’t be very stoked about it

4. Pantha Du Prince – Same

5. Julian Lynch – Meh

6. Das Racist – I actually don’t know much about them. Who knows, maybe they’ll be great?

7. The Morning Benders – File under “skip”

8. Ariel Pink – I like Ariel Pink but I don’t think his band’s sound will translate well to the festival setting, unless they play at night and everyone is on heavy psychedelics (actually not that unlikely a scenario).

9. Bat For Lashes – Not my thing but actually pretty decent live

10. Too many chillwave bands. C’mon. Nobody wants this, right?

Adam

The improbable Wish List:

1. Iggy & the Stooges – I think it’s my wishlist every year for them to come anywhere near Minnesota
2. Archers of Loaf – Of the most recent 90s indie rock reunions, this is one I’d love to see
3. Brian Eno – preferably performing Taking Tiger Mountain but I’d really take anything

I Would be Excited To See:

1. Odd Future – They’re blowing up pretty big now, there’s no way Pitchfork could miss out on this
2. Off! – The album got great reviews, it’d be great to Keith Morris on the big stage
3. Thee Oh Sees – Always great live
4. Gang Gang Dance – New album coming out, I’d love to finally see them
5. Die Antwoord – The spectacle might be enjoyeable enough
6. Black Lips – Always good
7. The Mountain Goats – maybe not festival appropriate, but always good
8. Kurt Vile – Getting big with a new Sub Pop album

I Would Feel Pretty Meh About:

1. The Dismemberment Plan – In the grand scheme of headlining indie rock reunions, I’ve seen this band way too many times
2. Vampire Weekend – These guys play everything right?
3. Girl Talk – I think album #3 has finally run this concept into the ground for me
4. Most of the bands that will end up playing this – I don’t know what the kids like these days

New estimated tax payment rules.

The Tax Adviser March 1, 1992 | Withers, John; Lee, Patrick T.; Padwe, Gerald W.

On Nov. 27, 1991, congress passed the Tax Extension Act of 1991, which extended various expiring provisions through June 30, 1992. The loss of revenue anticipated from these extensions (e.g., employer-provided educational assistance, health insurance deduction for self-employed, research and experimentaion tax credit, and low-income housing tax credit) by six months is $3.2 billion over five years. The Budget Act of 1990 imposed “pay-as-you-go” requirements for direct spending during fiscal years 1991-1995. Therefore, the Tax Extension Act of 1991 offset the lost revenue from the extended provisions by providing for accelerating estimated tax payments of certain corporate taxpayers.

Prior to the Tax Extension Act of 1991, corporations could satisfy either of the following two tests through estimated tax payments to avoid underpayment penalties.

1. The corporation could make four equal timely estimated tax payments that totaled 90% of the tax liability ultimately shown on the return. Instead of making equal payments, the corporation could base its estimated tax installments on its annualized taxable income.

2. If not a large corporation, the taxpayer could make four timely estimated tax payments, each of which equaled 25% of the tax liability ability for the preceding tax year. A large corporation (i.e., one that had taxable income of $1 million or more for any of the three preceding tax years) could use this rule only for its first quarterly payment.

Effective for tax years beginning during 1992, corporations relying on test 1 will be required to base estimated tax payments on 93% (rather than 90%) of current year tax liability. The applicable percentage will be 94% in 1993 and 1994, and 95% in 1995 and 1996. The provision is scheduled to sunset for years beginning after 1996. (As this item was going to press, the applicable percentage was changed from 94% to 95% starting in 1993.) Test 2 was not changed by the Tax Extension Act of 1991. site estimated tax payments

Individuals Also during November 1991, Congress approved extended benefits for long-term jobless workers and paid for the measure by changing the estimated tax payment requirements for certain individuals.

Under prior law, for tax years beginning before Jan. 1, 1992, individuals could avoid underpayment penalties if they made four equal estimated tax payments that totaled either 100% of their prior year’s tax liability (exception 1) or 90% of their current year’s tax liability (exception 2). The 90% test could be based on the taxpayer’s annualized income.

Effective for tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 1991, exception 1 will no longer be available to taxpayers who satisfy all three of the following conditions during a given year.

1. Current year adjusted gross income (AGI) is over $75,000 ($37,500 for married filing separately).

2. AGI increased by more than $40,000 over the prior year ($20,000 for married filing separately).

3. Estimated tax payments were made for any of the preceding three tax years, or penalties were assessed for failure to do so.

However, exception 1 will continue to be availble to all individuals for their first quarterly installment and to taxpayers with annualized AGI estimated to be within the threshold amounts. Any reduction in the installment under this exception must be made up by increasing the amount of the next required installment. website estimated tax payments

Gains from involunary conversions or from the sale or exchange of principal residences are not included in AGI for the $40,000 threshold. also, an owner of a less-than-10% interest in an S corporation or partnership, other than as a general partner, may use the prior year’s income from those entities to determine whether the $40,000 threshold is exceeded and to compue estimated tax for the currently year. However, more-than-10% owners (and all general partners) must include current year income from the passthrough entity in meeting the current year tax liability test.

These new rules for individuals also apply to trusts and estates. And, as with the corporate changes noted previously, these changes are scheduled to expire after five years.

From John Withers, Esq., and Patrick T. Lee, CPA, Washington, D.C.

Editor’s note: A singificant number of individuals are potentially affected by these new rules. Any proprietor whose business reports

Example: Corprate Estimated Tax Payments For corporation C, the first quarter estimated payment is based on three-month actual numbers. There is a $100,000 NOL carryover from the prior year. Assume that C will not have an alternative minimum tax.

Deduct NOL Deduct NOL before after annualization annualization Taxable income before NOL $106,000 $106,000 NOL (100,000 3-month taxable income 6,000 106,000 Annualized income 24,000 424,000 NOL (100,000) Net annualized income 24,000 324,0000 Tax at 34% 8,160 110,160 First quarter estimated payment (22.5%) $ 1,836 $ 24,786 on Form 1040, Schedule C, any general partner, any more-than-10% limited partner, any self-employed person and any more-than-10% S shareholder will need to consider the ramifications of the new law. Particularly when the prior year is a recession year, taxpayers may readily exceed the $40,000 permitted AGI growth.

As a result, CPAs will have to explain carefully to potentially affected clients the need to compute actual or annualized income for estimated tax intallments due in June, September and January. The very real difficulty of determining income of passthrough entity businesses (or proprietorships) in the 15-day interval between, say, August 31 and September 15 will also have to be well understood by clients.

While Congress seemed to be edging toward some structural simplificantion of our tax laws, these two last-minute bills have taken a major step in the other direction.

Oh yeah Pulp! That’s would be the top of my improbable wish list if I would have remembered

  4. jonbehm says:

Jarvis Cocker played just a few years back so I think that makes Pulp even more unlikely.

Matt, I can’t believe I didn’t mention Cults. I don’t think MC5 could really reunite though without raiding a couple of graves. The Strokes though would be terrific – and maybe not actually all that improbable considering their new record

  5. Matt says:

Yeah, hahaha, I meant to put MC5 in my improable picks… Cults will probably for sure play, same goes for her brother’s band Guards.

Anyway, here’s the initial lineup. We’re all doing pretty well…
(I can’t believe I didn’t think of TVOTR or Destroyer. I also thought A.C. would be a stretch, but I’m really excited to see them on there. I’ve been dying to see them.)

MC5 have “reunited” in the past few years and play occasionally with the singer from the Dictators singing

  7. zoe says:

i was surprised to see that toro y moi weren’t already on the lineup, considering how big of a crush Pitchfork has on them…

  8. solace says:

i’d only really be interested in Sunday’s lineup, and 3 of those bands are playing here next month.

def not going at this point unless the lineup changes drastically (or adds Archers of Loaf)

  9. solace says:

oh, and i do like FF & D Plan, but i can’t see being too excited to see FF or James Blake at an outdoor festival.

  10. Matt says:

Purchased. I figure if I can’t or don’t want to go later on I’ll be able to sell ’em for double. 110 is really cheap anyway for a three-day festival. And I won’t have to pay for lodging, so party on.

I have never been a huge Neko Case fan. Maybe I can learn to love this summer
