Okkervil River “Wake and Be Fine”
I feel like Will Sheff, leader of the tense, literate and angsty group Okkervil River, would sound intense even if he was reading the phone book. The band has ratchet up the theatrics on their last few albums (Black Sheep Boy, The Stage Names and The Stand In’s) and the first taste of their new record I Am Very Far doesn’t seem to find them slowing down. “Wake and Be Fine” hits all of the key points you would expect. A surprisingly charging acoustic riff, driving but idiosyncratic drumming and emotive lyrics and singing. Some people are a little turned off by the emotive and direct nature of Sheff’s writing, but they have always struck a chord with me and I am excited to hear the rest of I Am Very Far.
