Heliotrope 8: Five Picks (Adam)
Heliotrope 8 starts tonight at its new home at the Loring Theater, and while it contains many of our favorites (Mother Of Fire, Daughters Of The Sun, Thunderbolt Pagoda, Take Acre) there are plenty of mysteries on the list. To help you decide what you should see (if you choose not to watch it all), here’s 5 additional picks for acts you’ll definitely not want to miss:

International Novelty Gamelan
Why They Matter: A group of musicians looking for new ways to explore ancient instruments of Javanese gamelan. The group has recently performed providing a score to a recent ballet performance by James Sewell Ballet. Worth it to see their instruments alone, ING close out the first night of the festival as one of the most interesting.

Dreamland Faces
Why They Matter: Dreamland Faces are usually (but not limited to) an accordion and saw duo specializing in live film scores. I’ve seen them described as “modern nostalgia,” which is a better description than I could come up with.

Joe McPhee & Chris Corsano
Why They Matter: The sole non-local entry of the festival, McPhee and Corsano pack in the most years of experience. At age 71, McPhee has been a renowned free jazz saxophonist since teaching himself the instrument in his early 30s. Chris Corsano is best known for his duo with another saxophonist, Paul Flaherty, but has spent his time also playing with many artists such as Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Jandek, and Bjork. The duo will release their first record on the local label Roaratorio this summer.

Paul Metzger / JT Bates / Adam Linz
Why They Matter: Metzger and Linz played together as part of the recent TVBC show, a mix of Metzger’s unique (and loud) guitar playing combined with stand-up bass. JT Bates is one of the finest jazz drummers in town and performs regularly as part of Fat Kid Wednesdays. Not sure what to exactly expect from this trio but expect it to be magic.

Jon Jacob 3
Why They Matter: Jon Jacob 3 is one of the many aliases of electronic artist Albert Elmore. His debut record was confusing enough, made up of tracks from his years and years of recordings, so who knows what he has planned for us on Saturday.
