Dr. Michael White: “West African Strut”
Louisiana’s Dr. Michael White is one of the premiere figures in the world of traditional New Orleans jazz. Not only does he play a mean jazz clarinet, he’s also a professor of African American Music at Xavier College. White has a compilation of new recordings coming out this summer that promises to be a blend of “traditional jazz with influences and songs from diverse sources, like Africa, the Caribbean and popular music from the 1960s and 70s.” The first single, “West African Strut” just became available, and it’s a pretty wild mix of what sounds like African lamellophone and spooky jazz clarinet. This compilation will be available in parts, with the first installment dropping on June 21st on Basin Street Records
