Dent May “Fun”
Dent May doesn’t seem ready to be back to his old (rd: uke playing) self music wise, but he has at least gone as far as to returning to his given name after releasing material under the guise of his alter ego Dent Sweat (which to be honest was easily as good as anything he has done). The last we heard from May (as May) was the quirky pop of “That Feeling” b/w “Eastover Wives,” which only served to remind fans how great May can be, especially when returning to the schmaltzy songs that populated his debut LP. After his last record dropped on the Gorilla vs Bear sponsored Forest Feelings Records, he is back to his old label (Paw Tracks) and is sounding as good as ever. While he still seems content to let his ukulele get dusty in a closet while sharp synths and bouncing beats drive his songs, no matter what instrument he uses his songwriting is what really helps him stand out. “Fun” is another funky, tongue in cheek jam that sounds like it was written as a soundtrack for a rundown, sleazy country club, something I could picture popping up in his home state of Mississippi. 100 cassettes will be available on May’s upcoming tour with Real Estate and the clear 7″ will be released in September, with more details HERE.
