Active Child “Hanging On” “Playing House”
Active Child can, and will, be lumped in with the James Blakes of the world, for better or for worse. The two songs below show the haunted, spooky pop music created by the artist that is building the buzz in anticipation of his debut LP. The first is his contribution to the adult swim single series, which we talked about yesterday. “Hanging On” features the stuttering synths and brushed percussion melded with the haunted r&b vocals that seem so pervasive right now. The second song is from the bands forthcoming debut LP You are All I See (out in August) and features a collaboration with fellow darkened pop/dubstep/r&b artist How to Dress Well. Like the “Hanging On,” “Playing House” is equally sexy and unsettling, mixing hard bass and drum claps with forlorn and world weary falsetto singing. Active Child are not going to change the perspective of those who have decided that How to Dress Well/Holy Other/James Blake sound is already past it expiration date, but for those who are enjoying this trend, he is definitely worth checking out.
