Dum Dum Girls “Coming Down”
Dum Dum Girls, to me, have always stood out from the other female fronted garage rock/pop bands that have percolated in the last few years (i.e Vivan Girls, Best Coast, La Sera, Frankie Rose, etc). They seemingly are able to capture the Black Tambourine/Shop Assistants vibe without sounding like it this is just a first step until they can have a record deal from Converse and they can write glossy pop songs. The latest example of their great throwback songwriting is the woozy ballad “Coming Down.” The track sounds like a mournful 50’s pop song wrapped in fuzz, with lead singer Dee Dee (Kirstin Gundred) sounding powerful and restrained over the sad, wall of sound waltz. Makes me very excited for their new LP, which drops on Sub Pop in the fall.
