Big Troubles "Sad Girls"
In a perfect world, on their second LP’s the band Girls would sound more like the band Big Troubles did on their excellent debut LP. Unfortunately the real world pretty much never works out how I would like, so the exact opposite has happened. I was worried when the first B-Side (“Phantom”) was dropped in preview of the second Big Troubles LP Romantic Comedy, with their usual fuzzy shoegaze shine being polished away for a more traditional pop sound. I was hoping it was an anomaly (although a commenter said it wasn’t), but all hopes are basically dashed with the release of the A-side to the single, and album track, “Sad Girls,” which may be even more California pop than the “Phantom.” The instruments are clean, the vocals clear, the lyrics morose and their is even some clear, cutesy bells at the end of the track. Bummer. I will need a few more listens to judge the track on its own merit (leaving aside the disappointment that it isn’t Worry II), but I don’t see a situation where this album isn’t at least a little bit of a disappointment for me. If the songs are doing something for you that they aren’t for me, grab a pre-order HERE.
