Marijuana Deathsquads "Crazy Master"
Local noise-punk-jam group Marijuana Deathsquads have been making some noise (pun intended) locally for the last few years, but are starting to catch on nationally as they build towards releasing their debut LP (which I believe is dropping this fall). While I wish I could say it is because of their pluck and grit and the sensational songs they write, most non-Minneapolis writers seemed more focused on who is in the band and what other groups they play in. Oh well. Luckily the group are pretty good and can stand on their own two feet, especially in the live setting. While the studio is a dangerous proposition for a group so hell bent on organic electronic tom foolery, they seem to do OK with the confines so far, exemplified first on their contribution to the Totally Gross National Product mixtape and now on “Crazy Master,” the first track released from said forthcoming LP (or EP, or 12″, or 10″….really, they aren’t the best band when it comes to, you know, promoting their future material). The track is a long, meandering number that has moments of pure chaos and moments of grooves that border on danceable, but ultimately seems like a snapshot of a MDS mid-set opus, the kind of kinetic, hypnotic mess of energy and samplers, with demented vocals screaming from the ether for good measure. You aren’t sure whether to run for the hills to escape the Apocalypse or to throw your hands in the air for a Primal Scream like danceable salvation. Check out the track below and if you are out east check out their always great live show in October as they will be doing a residency at the Bowery Electric in October with Har Mar Superstar.
Stream from Brooklyn Vegan site and read their always amusing, high brow comments to remember how awesome the interet really is.
