Nâ Hawa Doumbia “Kungo Sogoni”
Blogger Brian Shimkovitz has been bringing light to his favorite obscure African tape releases for the last half decade on his aptly titled blog Awesome Tapes From Africa, and is taking his support to the next level as he is starting his record label spin off under the same name. The first release from the new label is the 1982 album La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 3 from Ivory Coast artist Nâ Hawa Doumbia. Listen to the dizzying guitar noodling and poly-rhythms which serve as the canvas for the wiry but powerful singing that jumps through the speaker like lighting bolts on a dry summer night. The song is equally spelling binding in its forward marching pace and unwieldy in the sporadic, devil may care vocals. Grab a pre-order HERE if the song grabs your attention and keep an eye out on both the site and the label for more cool future discoveries.
