Oneohtrix Point Never “Rubio”
Ricky Rubio, the Spanish-born rookie point guard for our very own Minnesota Timberwolves, has earned a lot of fans around the NBA during his first few games. His latest fan is someone a little farther off the beaten path and of more interest to Reviler readers—none other than ambient synth kingpin Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never. (Also one half of Ford & Lopatin, formerly Games). After Rubio’s best game of his young career yesterday, Lopatin posted a new song named after Rubio on his soundcloud page. The track is three quick minutes of serene and lush synth stabs, a slight departure from his more sample heavy 2011 release Replica. Ultimately, OPN leans more on the sound that helped catapult him to fame with his 2010 LP Returnal. Whether you are a basketball fan or not, you’ll appreciate Lopatin’s typical great work. Let’s hope our moppy-haired hero can inspire more musicians to create songs as good as “Rubio” going forward.
