How to describe Swedish band Death and Vanilla? Listening to their single “Ritual” brings to mind an Alfred Hitchcock film score—created by a coven of witches. Well, at least until mid-song when the synthesizers start to induce a trance. It’s female-fronted experimental pop that sounds simultaneously sound both old and new, mixing a vintage haunted house aesthetic with modern electronica for very interesting results. If I sound too enthusiastic about it, perhaps I am just desperate to fill the musical void left when Trish Keenan died well before her time last year. I’m not sure if anything I have heard since has sounded quite as “Broadcast-esque” as this. Listen for yourself below, and if you dig it you can grab the band’s new record here for mega-euros.
