Mother Of Fire: “Smoke”
You might notice something a little bit different about the new tune “Smoke” by Mother of Fire. Notice the violin? Yeah, it’s still there. But it sounds different, doesn’t it? In the pastm Mother of Fire’s sonic yarns were largely led by the sprightly dance of Naomi Joy’s demonic violin. But in the case of “Smoke,” the strings don’t sound nearly as nimble. In fact, alongside the guitar, Joy’s playing adds up to more of a trance-like drone, a psychedelic brume of doom-laden sawing. It’s a different sound for the group, but it works. Joy’s wildly primal singing sounds as frightening and wonderful as ever, and the lack of seesawing violin notes serves to emphasize her vocal dynamics even more. Mother of Fire’s new LP Feral Children will be out on April 20th.
