Orchard Thief: “Your Face In The Water”
Local experimental artist Sam Molstad (Orchard Thief) released his most recent record Sensational Living at the very beginning of the year. Since then he appears to have kept busy with his various projects (including his partnership with Tim Krause in Coral Legs) and that work seems to be paying off dividends in word-of-mouth buzz in local music circles. If you haven’t given Orchard Thief a listen yet, Molstad just recently decided to give away a new track from Sensational Living titled “Young Face in the Water” and it makes a great place to start. The tune is a great example of how Molstad employs warped, distorted vocals over wandering guitar chords and irregular drum patterns. Molstad also tends to use loop pedals to lay down complex guitar layers, but in this particular tune you don’t really see that until the last thirty seconds or so. If you dig what you are hearing, Molstad has a local show coming up on 4/21 at the Red Room which is above the Loring Pasta Bar and is hopefully Twin Peaks-themed. Molstad will be opening for Hive Dwellers, which is Calvin Johnson’s (Beat Happening) new band on K Records. See you there!
