Brian Jonestown Massacre “I Wanna Hold Your Other Hand”
The Brian Jonestown Massacre, namely front man Anton Newcombe, are survivors. Anyone who has seen Dig! knows the chaos surrounding the band, who have more albums than I can remember and enough lineup changes that make Guided By Voices look like ZZ Top in terms of longevity. Despite all of the outside “stuff,” the band have consistently made great music, whether tapping into shoegaze, jangly vintage garage rock or any other incarnation they have taken. Their latest record is the forthcoming LP Aufheben, which will be released on Newcombes own ‘a’ record label (also home to the new Magic Castles LP). Listen below to the excellent “I Want to Hold Your Other Hand,” which sounds like the mid to late 90’s BJM, where they channeled garage rock through the Spaceman 3 prism and gathered a whole lot of (rightly deserved) praise. Not sure if the volatile band was able to put together a whole record this good or if they will hold it together to tour behind the new material (they are due in MPLS on Aug 16 at First Ave), but as always the band are anything but boring.
