Heliotrope 9: Adam’s Recommended Picks
THURSDAY:
Maledicere
It may still be a well kept secret but Minneapolis is becoming a black metal hotbed these days. From the NPR blogged about False to bands like the atmospheric viola led Bloode Folke (part of the band will be playing earlier in the night as Mahngüs), there’s many new bands taking their queues from the Scandinavian wave of metal from the 1990s. Maledicere rarely performs live so here’s your chance to catch them.
Friday:
Claps:
I admit to having a real weakness for 80s synth-pop. So I was delighted last New Year’s Eve when Claps performed a set of New Order covers. Claps own debut record Wreck follows in the same tradition basically, full of electronic drums, synths and bass. I shamefully have yet to catch an actual performance by the band so I look forward to seeing them here.
Saturday:
TVBC:
TVBC’s reunion at the Loring Theater a little over a year ago marked their first performance since the first Heliotrope festival in 2003. Members Paul Metzger, Freddy Votel and new bassist Adam Linz brought back Metzger’s extreme guitar workouts that both thrilled and terrorized audiences throughout the 1990s. It’s an obviously rare chance to see such a great group so don’t miss your last chance in who knows how long to see the band close out the final night of the festival.
