Wet Hair: “Camoflage”

Last year Iowa City trio Wet Hair found the perfect balance between kraut grooving and pop psychedelia on In Vogue Spirit, their first LP on the local DeStijl label.  And with this year’s release of the follow up, Spill Into Atmosphere, they don’t seem to be screwing around with that balance.  While the band’s lineup has changed a bit (Guitarist Matt Fenner has been replaced with Justin Tye) the first available single “Camoflage” contains a relatively similar approach.  Shawn Reed plays melodic synth lines and sings over them in his flat, off-kilter baritone while drummer Ryan Garbes pushes the rhythms in geometric patterns.  The synths are definitely the melodic core of the sound, however Tye’s repetitious guitar part occasionally let’s loose. Spill is available via DeStijl today and can be ordered here.
