Stream: Dusted “Total Dust”
As they say in the business, to assume “makes an ass out of u and me.” When I heard there was a new side project called Dusted from Brian Borcherdt of Holy Fuck, one of my favorite electronic bands, I painted a pretty concise picture in my head as to what it would sound like. It was part a tad of the groove based electronic noise that his day job creates mixed with a dabble of the drugged out tomfoolery of Tobacco, the Black Moth Super Rainbow side project. (My theory on the later is that they are both one name side projects branching off from really good bands…otherwise I have no idea where I got that connection.) Low and behold it sounds nothing like what I expected. Closer to a lo-fi-post-Kid A-Radiohead project than a follow up to Latin, Total Dust is a gentle, easy going walk gently nudged forward by echo laden vocals and relatively restrained guitar work. The songs have a textured, ambient folk feel to them and nothing feels rushed or forced, and the pace rarely if ever venturing into the brisk, heart pumping world I was thinking I would hear. While it wasn’t what I was expecting, Total Dust have proven adept at sound tracking bleary eyed late nights lately, so maybe it can serve as the hangover soundtrack after getting your mind blown by the next Holy Fuck record. Listen below and be the judge for yourself.
