Introducing: Unhappy Virgin Damage
(Disclaimer: Unhappy Virgin Damage is a group containing Reviler staff Adam Bubolz, but I promise he didn’t coerce me into writing this. No money traded hands, no promises made, and frankly, he usually isn’t very nice to me, so this post is legit. Or as legit as something on Reviler.org can be)
Listen below to the bandcamp’d version of the new-ish tape from local group Unhappy Virgin Damage. The noisy duo stretch the sonic pallete from the frantic chaos of “Acoustic #1 En Masse” to distant, ambient spookiness of “Egg-Shaped,” never venturing too far from the dark haze of crackling distortion. The tape is dense and opaque, sludging up even their most boyant grooves (songs like “Spill It In” and “Zurich Bathhouse” sound like a Skoal Kodiak song playing from the bottom of an abandoned pit). In addition to Unhappy Virgin Damage, tonight’s monthly Modern Radio showcase at KCK also features a performance by Old Moon (the band formerly known as Strong Bones), a group that contains members formerly in Malachi Constant and Hockey Night. Above and beyond all of that goodness, you also can catch a DJ set by Adam (and Nate of Bombay Sweets). Knowing Adam as well as I do, you can expect some deep Whitney Houston cuts, early Nickleback (you know, before they were cool) and lots of your favorite nu-metal jams. It all goes down tonight at the Kitty Cat Klub starting at 9pm for the economically sustainable price of “free.”
