Flashback Friday: Can “Lost Tapes” + Stephen Malkmus Covers
Can are one of those bands that are equally adored and ignored. The highly influential German band hoisted the krautrock genre to new levels with their amazing stretch of music in the 1970’s, but never made huge waves outside of music geeks in the US. Two recent developments are looking to change this (criminal) oversight, although I am not holding my breath that suddenly the general public, who seem perfectly content with Taylor Swift and Mumford and Sons, will all of the sudden invest time in expansive 10 minute experimental rock jams. Mute records is digging back into the groups catalog for a 5LP set called Lost Tapes that feature tracks that were never released from the groups 1968-1977 golden age. You can watch two videos below the explain the project and feature tracks on the record. The other boost the band recently received was Stephen Malkmus, godfather of the 90’s and former front man of Pavement, covering their album Ege Bamyasi in their hometown of Cologne, Germany to celebrate the records 40th anniversary. Watch two videos below capturing that performance. If you aren’t already a fan of Can, their run in the early 70’s from Tago Mago to Future Days was amazing, but the videos below are a good place to start to see if you might want to venture from the “ignore” side of the equation to the “adore.”
