Carnivore Bones: “Paper”
Here’s a promisingly weird-sounding tune from new local band Carnivore Bones, a project that mainly consists of Alan Skamser-O’Neil (or Teammates) and other collaborators. “Paper” is the group’s first single, and it’s an intriguing listen in part because it’s such a departure from most of the local music we receive. “Paper” plots a slowly building synth melody alongside synths, beats, and electronic noise, as well as highly distorted vocals that start out sounding childlike and eventually evolve into something a little less creepy by the song’s final refrain of “god is just a cloud.” It’s a bit out there but not so far gone as to sacrifice what is actually a fairly sweet-sounding melody. This is the first time Skamser-O’Neil has crossed my radar and I am definitely interested in hearing what he’s up to next (Production on “Paper” is also credited to Brady Mielke, another of Skamser-O’Neil’s bandmates from teammates).
