Bare Mutants “Inside My Head”

Bare Mutants meld nicely into the Hozac Records sound. The venerable Chicago label has housed bands ranging from The Black Lips to Dum Dum Girls to Outer Minds to UV Race to Smith Westerns to locals Cozy and former locals France Has the Bomb. If you know the bands listed, you get a good impression of the general asthetic the label is drawn to, a fuzzy mix of scuzzy flower-punk and classic garage rock. Bare Mutants are the project of Jered Gummere, who is probably best known for his work with The Ponys, and fits the label to a “T.” You can listen below to the song “Inside My Head,” a track released last year as a 7″ that is a slow burner that billows ahead on a wave of fuzzy guitars and a caustic tambourine jangle. Both classic and fresh, Bare Mutants breath life to the idea that makes Hozac so great. See them tonight with Claps and Fire in the Northern Firs at the Turf Club.
