M / M “fünf k” & “8 (Dub)”
Michael McGregor is still probably best known for his late, great site Chocolate Bobka, but he is making a pretty seamless transition from writing about cool music to creating it. He put out a few zonked out tapes as Meadowlands, his moniker for his soothing, ambient side, but now has switched up his nom de plume to m/m. His new sound borrows more liberally from dubbed out house music and will better soundtrack a dancefloor than staring at clouds. “8 (Dub)” is shorter and sharper, with a almost a pop focus and a concise four and a half minute running time. The other offering is the wandering, more loosey-goosey “fünf k,” which is a galloping track that gets pulled down by gravity (and a thick, wobbly synth bassline) from the clouds to the decadent dance floor. Both stretch out McGregor’s sound further than he has ventured yet while continuing his streak of creating music that is good enough to have been lavished with praise on his late, great website.
