Wavves + FIDLAR: Songs + Show Tonight!
Wavves have done a pretty good job over the last few years of flying their lo-fi flag, writing hooked filled, pop leaning garage-punk tracks without ever sounding too much like Green Day. They are back with their latest LP Afraid of Heights, off of which you can listen below to the buzzing “Sail to the Sun” and the mid tempo “Demon to Lean On.” The former is better than the later, which borders on cheesy, but Wavves aren’t looking to reinvent the wheel with their music. The chords are of the power variety, the melodies easy to digest and the vocals are right out front in their stoned-on-the-beach way. These songs are meant to soundtrack a skate park, not change your life, so set your standards accordingly.
Following in footsteps (and going on tour with) Wavves are California punks Fidlar, who ride a wave(har har) of feedback on their energetic debut LP. Listen below to the tracks “White on White” and “Cheap Beer” to get a sense of the scuzzy, bare bones material they pack into their record. The songs are short gut punches of fuzzy punk delivered with a great big middle finger of youthful dissonance. Their songs make Wavves sound warm and cuddly, with the haze traded in for crushed cans of PBR and bloody noses. Their opening set for the tour should not be missed. Check out both bands March 29th at the 7th Street Entry.
