Do I have mixed feeling about Record State Day? Yes. It can easily feel like a Black Frida-esqe, consumerism laden shit-show that turns buying records into a contest that is somehow more about owning one of the limited copies released of a given record than actually being a fan of music—BUT, it also has now twice meant that Ty Segall has covered T Rex songs, which is has to be worth something. Whether it would have happened otherwise is beyond the point, because Ty Rex 2 is happening for Record Store Day 2013. Listen below Segall’s faded take on “The Motivator” from the EP and, if you are so inclined, start lining up now to fight other record nerds for a copy come 4/20. In another cool twist, you can go HERE to listen to everyone’s favorite flower punks, The Black Lips, covering the good ole boys Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings classic tune “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” I still will not be a)standing in line in the middle of the night or b)buying records from some asshole at a 500% markup on ebay, but I will be enjoy the hell out of these two tracks.
