Dent May “Born Too Late” + Fingers Club Remix (Minneapolis show 9/18)
Dent May has morphed into many different shapes over the last few years, but lately he seems to have settled into a synth-leaning, pop/funk/R&B crooner. After taking three years to follow up his debut album with the 2012 LP Do Things, May has made a quick turnaround with Warm Blanket, his third LP that is coming out later this year, again on the Animal Collective run Paw Tracks label. Listen below to the quirky, melodic jaunt “Born too Late.” Like most of his work, the music is fun and spry while the lyrics have definite dark undertones. First it was the Uke that provided the pick-up for his sad-sappy-sucker lyrics, but now it is sugary sweet synths that do the trick. Below the original version is a remix from House legend Mr. Fingers, which takes the track to the next level and makes it a straight up club banger. I wonder since May commissioned the remix from the club legend if it is a sign of a future Dent May musical jaunt? I wouldn’t put it past him to meld his highbrow pop with some Chicago House music. Either way, check out Dent May with his friends Dead Gaze when they roll through town on Sept 18th at the 7th Street Entry.
