Run the Jewels is the earth shattering combination of Killer Mike and El-P, creators of two of the very best LPs of 2012, who have come together to birth a (free) mixtape that towers over virtually everything else released in their world this calender year. Their tour together was one of the best shows to hit our fair city last year and it seems only natural that these two came together to do a full collaborative effort. El-P handled the production, and as to be expected, it is a massive, dark, sharply edged oasis of indie-rap nirvana. Both MCs are in top form, with a sense of looseness that a mixtape offers to rappers who usually are pretty intense in their delivery. They have some great guests (Big Boi, Prince Paul), but the energy of these two MCs at the top of their game bouncing ideas and taunts off each other is a sight to be seen. It is a fun album chalk full of bravado, party starting beats and rhymes that will slap a grin on your face as you reach for the rewind button.
