POS/Marijuana Deathsquads: WDELH/MDS/RMX Review + Free Download
When We Don’t Even Live Here first struck around the same time last year, it was definitely something palpable, something on the cusp of chaotic, from its production down to its lyrical themes. If the album was any evidence, it was definitely P.O.S’s most urgent piece of material. Yet just one year later, with his Marijuana Deathsquads brethren in tow, we now are witnessing a whole new interpretation of the album. So what should you expect from this remixed project?
You should expect nothing less than a tipping point of sorts, every single texture drowned in murky and haunting 808s and synths whirring and wheezing, vocals pretty much pitched anywhere on the sides of the spectrum between chopped-and-screwed H-Town style and pitched up to hell, which makes for an entertaining and well-arranged ride. Take for example the MDS take on “Fire to the Hole/Arrow to the Action” where it keeps the verses in tact, while a certain portion of the hook replays, but in other spots such as “Bumper” and “Fuck Your Stuff”, perhaps the album’s most accessible tunes, they are pretty much reduced down to bare-bones elements. The former uses POS’s “I take my time with it…” lyric and flips it into the sole item building up the verses, whereas “Fuck Your Stuff” uses “My whole crew’s on some shit” as the element that everything else is built around, as the synths, and then as P.O.S gets into his verses, the drums get more aggressive and harsh, making for an entertaining listen through and through.
If you weren’t into Marijuana Deathsquads beforehand, it pretty much sucks to be you to an extent. However, with WDELH/MDS/RMX, its a proper primer and makes for an enjoyable listen, and the twists and turns that Marijuana Deathsquads apply to P.O.S’s album are nothing short of dope. It’s further reason why if you haven’t heard the original record, or heard any of the Marijuana Deathsquad’s catalog, then maybe its time you did so, immediately.
