Allan Kingdom: Future Memoirs EP (TGNP this Saturday!)
Last year at the Totally Gross National Party, Allan Kingdom was a brand new name for most of us in attendance, something that most certainly will not be the case when he performs on Saturday at this years iteration of the local fest. In the past calendar year, he has went from anonymous rapper around his own city to a name that is popping up nationally. Most recently, he released the potent Future Memoirs EP. Like a rap version of Frank Ocean, who refined his classic-yet-futuristic take on R&B, Kingdom takes the core of hip hop and expands it through a time-warped house of mirrors. His laconic style is partially twisted, partially smooth, partially madcap and completely engaging. He takes parts and pieces of the genre and breaks them into a million little pieces, gluing them together with his unique aesthetic. He has released some strong material at a pretty good pace in the past few months, but Future Memoirs is a bold and confident statement. On “Imposters,” Kingdom raps “I think I’m mediocre but she told me otherwise.” Whoever she is, she is right.
Stream Future Memoirs below and catch Kingdom along with a plethora of local groups Saturday night at the Totally Gross National Party V at Icehouse, starting at 2pm.
