Dean Blunt “50 Cent” & Holly Herndon “Home”
Two artists that can safely be described as enigmatic, in the best way possible, are back with new material right around the same time. Both Dean Blunt and Holly Herndon seem equally interested in deconstructing pop music as they do writing cold-and-calculated pop hooks. “Home” by Herndon is jarring and off-kilter, a more paranoid follow up to the her amazing “Chorus” from earlier this year, while Blunt continues to make what I always think of as an electronically inclined, and more soulful version of, the timeless music of Bill Callahan. Both Blunt and Herndon make music that looks forward and backwards, and are two of the most consistently exciting and challenging artists around. Hearing new tunes from both on the same week was an unexpected treat. Dive in.
