Stream: Hollow Boys ‘Violent Ascension’ EP
Following hot on the heels of their excellent Believe in Nothing LP from last year, Minneapolis trio Hollow Boys are back with a new EP, Violent Ascension. Their second EP, and fourth release overall, is a four song collection that builds on the groups mastery of shadowy pop music, laden with gloom but buoyed by richly melodic songwriting. Stretching their sound to new levels, both the album opener (“Another You (Violence),” 6:01) and closer (“Light (Ascension),” 7:51) find the band really using time and space to draw out their dramatic, swirling sounds that they have become known for. Seeped in pop and featuring the ragged aesthetic of gloomy garage, Violent Ascension is a fine addition to the bands already sterling catalog of releases. Their sound continues to be darkly classic yet still feels fresh and new, a pedigree that lifts them into the upper echelon of our scene in terms of consistently solid releases over the last few years. Listen to and buy the EP below, and catch them next Friday (March 13th) at the Hex with Jason Edmonds & Cozy for the Fuck Knights LP release show.
