Introducing: The post-punk swagger of Swimsuit Area
Swimsuit Area are a local collective who make twitchy, melodic post-punk, which you can sample below via their 2014 EP Occupado!. The three-song EP finds the five piece creating a storm via the unusual amalgamation of two basses, drums and violin. Local music fans may recognize the confident swagger behind the vocals, as lead singer Rebecca Leigh formerly fronted the dearly departed Maps of Norway. The resulting cacophony conjures a darker, more strung out Yeah Yeah Yeahs or a female fronted Minutemen, showcasing a band that is able to create thoughtful, forward-thinking music while still making songs that could get your body moving. If you dig the short EP below, you can see the band tonight (4/24) with Nightosaur, The Great Went and Muscle Beach at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul. It’s Friday night, and the show is free, so you don’t have any excuses.
