Stream Nymphs II, the first new solo 12″ from producer Nicolas Jaar in four years
Nicolas Jaar is a producer and artist of massive esteem, creating tapestries of sound that touch on the barren landscapes of ambient music, the chilled out grooves of downbeat House and the cerebral melodies and vocal lines of minimalist techno. His 2011 LP Space is Only Noise is a still a stunning document of his otherworldly talent. Yesterday, in a surprise move, he released a new solo 12″ on his Other People label, his first in four years. Over the two sides (‘The Three Sides of Audrey and Why She’s All Alone Now’ b/w ‘No One is Looking at U’), you can hear Jaar venture into countless musical areas his music covers over the combined 15 minutes lifespan of the 12″. The b-side is especially heavy, with a twitchy, soulful melody wrapping its fingers through a crackling beat and a ghostly canvass of noise. It is beautiful, confounding, challenging, heartfelt, joyous, sad and above all else and unfolding missive that, after a half dozen listens, offers new surprises each time you hit repeat. Get some good headphones and dive in.
