Introducing: Space jazz trio Catsax (Release show TONIGHT at Honey)
Catsax are a new trio consisting of local scene vets Nelson Devereaux, Big Cats and Miguel Hurtado, with some help from their friends. Walking the line between prog, space-jazz (their description) and ambient, they create what sounds like a soundtrack to a trippy movie through the eyes of hip-hop heads. At moments it is heady, at other moments it seems to waft on the smoke from a lonely jazz club in a dark alley. It is an emotive and interesting collection of songs that doesn’t feel indebted to any particular path or prescription. I’m new to the collection, but it feels like a batch of songs that will mold to different experiences and be something that offers different wrinkles on different listens.
Check out their full LP below and, if you dig, buy a limited run CS of it tonight at their release show at Honey in Northeast Minneapolis with Lydia Liza and JT Bates. Full info and RSVP HERE.
