Stream Freakwater’s “Scheherazade” / Show Wed
Freakwater are amongst the earliest progenitors of the alt country sound. Along with bands like Uncle Tupelo (who formed just a couple years before them) Freakwater helped to define the genre’s foundations. The band’s self-title debut actually preceded alt country landmark No Depression by a year. Now, roughly 27 years after Freakwater first formed, they have released their tenth album Scheherazade (and their first in ten years) on the Bloodshot label. Scheherazade is Freakwater at their best – sweeping, austere melodies supporting Catherine Irwin and Janet Beveridge Bean’s harmonized moody lyricism. You can stream Scheherazade below and will also get a rare chance to catch them live this week at the Cedar Cultural Center (Wed, 3/16 – tickets).
