Review of new ‘Nite Time’ EP from local R&B singer Ness Nite (Release show FRIDAY!)
Ness Nite’s debut EP Nite Time comes after many show stealing performances with a brand of R&B that is able to straddle between equal parts Missy Elliott and FKA Twigs. The end result from the six tracks that sprawl over a less than half-hour duration create ethereal and atmospheric R&B with infectious hooks and more than serviceable raps that help keep a listener’s attention.
Take for example the lead single “Yes” featuring Nick Jordan, all about chasing a crush, where Nick plays the subject of Ness’s affection, or the upbeat start of “Sigh,” which almost has an Aaliyah like aura surrounding its groove. Elsewhere on this EP, there’s the highlight of “Feelin'” with a wonky and subdued synth as its main melody, or else there’s “Divine” which is equally as enjoyable and just as infectious.
The production, paired with Ness’s lyrics are able to capture her best traits; the way her voice is able to cut through production that might seem busy at times, but are able to let the melodies and her rap interludes shine through brightly, and help make Nite Time a slow burning and majestic listen that plays perfect to the after-dusk vibes.
