Minnesota Noise Rock Is Alive and Well with STNNNG and Buildings (Dual Release Show Tonight!)
STNNNG should really no need any introduction at this point but in case you do I covered most of it before the last record release in 2013. Veterans Of Pleasure is the band’s 5th full length and 2nd recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago. “The Last Nostalgia” opens the album as a steady hypnotic repetitive guitar groove with some melodic bass flourishes before kicking in Chris Besinger’s vocals. Albini’s recording still perfectly suits what we already know and love of the band over the course of the album’s 11 tracks which even manage to throw an unexpected curveball or two (see Top Hat Man).
Buildings meanwhile have found a new home in Oshkosh’s Gilead Media for their 3rd full length album. Recorded at Pachyderm Studios, You Are Not One Of Us’ first released track “Smell The Pool” drives Buildings’ Jesus Lizard meets DC sound straight into the ground with a dirgey detuned guitar and bass and Brian Lake’s shouts. You can also check out the track “Pastor Dick” at New Noise which nicely melds Jesus Lizard bass grooves to sharp AC/DC guitar.
Buildings and STNNNG are both celebrating record releases tonight as well as Buildings kicking off a European tour. Tongue Party opens. More details at First Avenue.
