Introducing: Wisconsin post-punk band Tarek Sabbar (Minneapolis show Saturday with Cult of Lip and DIIE!)
The Cult of Lip have been hosting a weekly series at Grumpy’s Downtown this July, and they’ve brought along a score of great supporting bands. For the last show of the series they are bringing not one but two bands to help them wrap up the residency. In addition to local pysch-kraut group DIIE, Tarek Sabbar will be joining the fun all the way from the far-away-lands of Wisconsin. Below you can listen to a two-song online EP from Sabbar that came out earlier this year on the Close Up of the Serene label out of Milwaukee. The A-side of the taut two song EP, “Plastic Bags,” explores heady side of post-punk and captures the mechanical groove and hazy fuzz guitar of Suicide or PiL. The B-side “8&14,” finds Sabbar venturing into a chillier, electronic, and twitchy world. The dichotomy of the two tracks captures the spirit of the krautrock bands he seems clearly indebted to, dipping one toe in the guitar-psych world and another in the futuristic electronic landscape. It is good stuff. Listen below and check out the free show at Grumpy’s on Saturday. Music at 10, I believe.
